A three-judge panel is expected to decide whether former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko will be approved by the IEBC to run for Mombasa Governor.
The panel was appointed by Chief Justice Martha Koome who ordered all four cases filed to bar Sonko from running for office to be consolidated and be heard by the panel before reaching a final verdict.
On Saturday, the IEBC announced it was barring Sonko from running for office on August 9, citing the fact that he was fired from his post as Nairobi governor, so he would not run for office. However, Sonko strongly criticized the decision, urging Chebukati to give the court a chance to decide.
Earlier, the EACC Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission demanded that a total of 211 candidates, including Sonko, be barred from running for public office due to misconduct.
